Sleep Apnea and Snoring Treatment

Get a restful's nice sleep with a sleep apnea or snoring mouthguard
The most common type of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, occurs when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the airway to narrow or close. Dr. Bensoussan can treat sleep apnea patients with a special mouthguard he fabricates to hold their airways open.
This is called Oral Appliance Therapy. Oral appliance therapy is an alternative to CPAP therapy (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy) for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea or who can’t tolerate the CPAP machine.
Dr. Bensoussan uses the OASYS Hinge Appliance™, custom-fit for each patient. It’s designed to gently shift the lower jaw forward during sleep. The hinge allows for natural movement and maximum comfort.
Keeping your jaw healthy
Dr. Bensoussan adds an additional step to his sleep apnea treatment. He provides you with a custom repositioning device which you use for 30 minutes in the morning. This appliance is to help relax and reset the jaw muscles and joints after a night of sleeping with the jaw held open. It “deprograms” your jaw muscles and joints. This reduces the risk of TMJ (jaw joint) issues.

Oral Appliance Therapy for Snoring
Oral appliance therapy can also be used to prevent snoring. Snoring occurs when the muscles in the throat relax, causing the soft palate, uvula, and tongue to partially block the airway. The oral appliance maintains the jaw in a forward position, preventing obstruction of the airways.

Suspect You Might Have Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea has to be diagnosed by a medical practitioner before any treatment is provided. If you suspect you have sleep apnea, you can come in for an evaluation with Dr. Bensoussan and he will coordinate with your physician or a sleep specialist for testing. Usually you can do the test at home. No testing or medical prescription is needed for snoring treatment with oral appliance therapy.
